The Exploration Pages - The Cold Blue Twilight

The Exploration Pages are being created to further illuminate the concepts used in Ocean Born Muse's works. In the Pages, you'll find a description of the ideology of each song, as well as one of its verses.

The Cold Blue Twilight is a landscape and exploration of the metaphysical, emotional, and spiritual. The name itself indicates an in-between or immersion state, or a spiritual dimension outside of space and time. The color blue is a shade of ending, as it occurs towards the omega end of the spectrum. Twilight has long been thought of as an in-between time, occurring between day and night; some folk beliefs say that magical or miraculous happenings occur at twilight.

Last Breath

A wordless vocalise, Last Breath is the beginning of the descent into the Underworld; beneath the waves, the water slipping over your head.

The Tower of Sei

The song that set the tone for most of The Cold Blue Twilight, The Tower of Sei was inspired by my first novel, Angelsong. In the novel, the Tower of Sei is a landmark, and the home of the archangel Raziel. The ideology of the song clashes and yet sychronizes with the idea of Raziel as the fiery destroyer, in that it is a song of cold, of immersion, of a sleeping spiritual state.

The Tower of Sei was written at a very difficult and dark time for me in the past year, and it was written out of a desire for mental escape.

The snows drift deep in December's tide
morning chill creeps in to set the ice
see in me the cold blue sea
on the wind I fall to her...

Loss

Loss was written about the loss of a spiritual landscape. The instrumentation was chosen specifically to seem out of place with the vocals; machines and technology taking over what was once a thriving, spiritual, organic world. It was also written in honor of my patron muse, Polyhymnia, and also for Melpomene, the muse of tragedy.

An empty wind whispers
on the mountainside
cold hands shiver
casting stones aside...

Archaeus

Archaeus is a throwback to Divine Technology, a more refined electronica/instrumental track. Archaeus is also the name of a greatsword.

The Paragon of Justice

The Paragon of Justice is another song inspired by Angelsong. The main character, Melody, sings this song just before she undergoes a...transition. Written in Latin and Scandinavian derivatives, the song is about a class of celestials known as paragons of justice - those beings who are charged with keeping order and justice in the cosmos.

In your creation, the Answer is given
the question of the fortune of all
The paragon of justice
Your sword will rise
In your holy light, the paragon of justice
will rise again

Arc Reactor

Written in the last year of Bush's presidency, Arc Reactor was written as an expression of outrage for all the lives that have been lost in the battles in the Middle East, not just of American soldiers but of the civilians and soldiers of those countries as well. It is a question - to ask why innocents must suffer the injustices of the guilty. This song was also inspired by Yasmina Khudra's novel, The Sirens of Baghdad.

The motes of moonlight dance for destruction
the wild explosions seek their targets
the war is raging so elegantly
the silver sleek machines

Windwaterward

Windwaterward was written to express love, and affection, reached for and lost. It was written for a person whom I regard as a good friend, though our ways have gone astray from one another in recent years.

Wending the wind
over the water
your bitter smile
the shadow of my doubt...

Underworld

Underworld's theme is fairly straightforward. Written in honor of the guardians of the dead, Hecate and Ereshkigal, as well as Atropos, who cuts the threads of life, the song is an exploration of what may come after we leave this place on our journey across the spiritual planes.

Deep in winter's chill
a spirit ebbs and wanes
into the deep
to the judgement gates
where all good souls are saved...

The Dream

Inspired by Bella Morte's "Find Forever Gone,", The Dream was written to express hope, determination, and the will to succeed. It is a hymn to pursuing one's dreams to the very end, and the belief that no matter how small or fragile your dreams may be, nothing should put stop you from reaching for them, or from believing that the world can be a better place.

In my dream
no blood is shed
no flags are burnt
In my dream
We live now, for today

Twilight (Damien's Song)

Twilight was written for another close friend of mine, one who taught me and showed me much during the time I was able to share with him. Wherever he is, a part of my hope and heart rests with him and his family, and that he will remember what he taught me as vividly as I do.

Weeping softly
for the cold and bitter night
reaching memory
in the cold and still twilight...
